Savings Calculator FAQ
How are the insurance costs calculated?
We aggregate average monthly premiums across five insurance types — car, home, life, health, and pet insurance — for each US state and UK region. Data comes from our rate research updated quarterly. These are average costs and your actual premiums will depend on your personal circumstances.
Why do insurance costs vary so much by location?
Insurance premiums are heavily influenced by local factors: accident and crime rates affect car insurance, weather and natural disaster risk affect home insurance, healthcare costs vary by state, and regional veterinary costs affect pet insurance. Regulatory environments and competition levels also play a role.
What types of insurance are included in the total?
The calculator includes five types: car insurance (liability + collision), home insurance (buildings + contents), life insurance (term life for a 35-year-old non-smoker), health insurance (marketplace/PMI plan), and pet insurance (dog, accident & illness cover). Mortgages, credit cards, and personal loans are not included as they vary based on individual borrowing.
Can I actually save money by moving to a cheaper state or region?
While the calculator shows regional cost differences, we don't recommend moving solely for insurance savings. Instead, use the comparison links to find better rates from competing providers in your current location — switching insurers is typically the fastest way to save.
How often is the rate data updated?
We review and update our rate data quarterly to reflect current market conditions. The data shown represents average premiums and is intended for comparison purposes only — always get personalised quotes for accurate pricing.
